Survive in this indie horror game

The Apartment is a free-to-play indie game from Max Horror. In this horror adventure experience, you have to explore a run-down apartment building and try to uncover the secrets about your missing brother. Its grainy 3D graphics give a retro feel, like most video games from fifth-gen consoles from the turn of the millennium.

It has graphics slightly better than LETHAL OMEN and a premise slightly reminiscent of From The Darkness, resulting in something Lovecraftian as you never fully uncover the truth behind the game’s mystery. This, however, adds to its cult classic feel and makes it a must-try.

Find the roots of evil

In The Apartment, you walk around and explore an abandoned, decrepit apartment building. It has no other characters aside from the one you’re using, which already sets up a creepy feel. It doesn’t use overly scary set designs, with the rooms and the hallways mostly looking like your average building. The only scary detail is the writings on the wall, giving you hints about the story.

As a horror game, it has a short playthrough that once you’re done with it, you’re left with a lot of questions. The developer admits to this being an incomplete project, with an ending added to make it publishable. This fact, however, doesn’t diminish the value of the game; it only makes you want for more content and to shed more light on the game premise.

It uses jump scares effectively, but with monsters jumping out of corners. What makes this scary and surprising is its use of lighting. The game turns off and on at unexpected turns, from blinking hallway lamps to televisions suddenly turning on. After completing the objectives, the game ends rather abruptly and leaves you with a sense of mystery as to what your character was up against.

A short scare

The Apartment is a quick fix for horror game fans everywhere. Its retro feel plus various design choices make it as unsettling as games from older consoles. Despite its short playthrough, it manages to leave an impression on players. As a horror experience, it mainly relies on the effective use of lighting to deliver. It will leave you with more questions and a wish to have more content from this game.
